Most leaves are broad and flat. Which advantage does that shape give the plant?

Spreading a leaf out puts as much tissue as possible in the path of the light without making the leaf thick, so more light is intercepted for the same amount of material. A leaf does not take water in through its blade, so a wide surface is no help for that, and a flat shape gives little room for storage.
