Link the mainland and Caribbean capitals

About 5 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions move between country names and present national capitals across a long mainland chain and a dense Caribbean cluster. Learn each as part of a route, then use the country wording to separate similar city names.

Walk south, then island-hop

The mainland route starts with two country-plus-City names: Mexico–Mexico City and Guatemala–Guatemala City. Continue south as Honduras–Tegucigalpa, El Salvador–San Salvador, Nicaragua–Managua, Costa Rica–San José and Panama–Panama City. Panama returns to the country-plus-City pattern, while San Salvador repeats Salvador with San in front.

Caribbean hopCapital chain
Large islands and the BahamasCuba–Havana, Jamaica–Kingston, Haiti–Port-au-Prince, Dominican Republic–Santo Domingo and Bahamas–Nassau
Eastern Caribbean, first groupAntigua and Barbuda–Saint John's, Barbados–Bridgetown, Dominica–Roseau and Grenada–Saint George's
Eastern Caribbean, second groupSaint Kitts and Nevis–Basseterre, Saint Lucia–Castries and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines–Kingstown

Use sound contrasts inside the island chain. Kingston belongs to Jamaica, while Kingstown adds a final w for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Saint John's belongs to Antigua and Barbuda, whereas Saint George's belongs to Grenada.

Untangle the common confusions

TemptationHow to untangle it
Using only the country name for an echo capitalA city is required, so retain City in Mexico City, Guatemala City and Panama City.
An earlier political centre feels currentCheck the present-day signal. Nicaragua uses Managua rather than León or Granada, Haiti uses Port-au-Prince rather than Cap-Haïtien, and Saint Lucia uses Castries rather than Soufrière.
A port, resort or major town seems nationally importantLocal prominence is a different role. Jamaica uses Kingston rather than Montego Bay, Dominica uses Roseau rather than Portsmouth, and the Bahamas uses Nassau rather than Freeport.
Saint John's and Saint George's are swappedAttach the final word to the country: John's goes with Antigua and Barbuda; George's goes with Grenada.
Nearby island capitals trade placesReplay the hop in order: Cuba–Havana, Bahamas–Nassau, Barbados–Bridgetown, then Saint Vincent and the Grenadines–Kingstown.
