Island-hop through the capitals of Oceania

About 4 min

Questions stay in the language in which they were published.

These questions ask you to pair Pacific countries with their capitals and to notice exact place names or political jurisdictions. An island-hopping route makes the short, unfamiliar names easier to keep apart.

Make three island chains

Island chainCapital associations
Western PacificPapua New Guinea–Port Moresby, Solomon Islands–Honiara and Vanuatu–Port Vila
Polynesian routeSamoa–Apia, Tonga–Nukuʻalofa and Tuvalu–Funafuti
Central and northern routeKiribati–South Tarawa, Marshall Islands–Majuro, Palau–Ngerulmud and Federated States of Micronesia–Palikir
Fiji anchorFiji–Suva

Give each chain a sound pattern. The western route has two Port names around Honiara: Port Moresby, Honiara, Port Vila. The Polynesian route moves through the open vowels of Apia and Nukuʻalofa before ending at Funafuti. In the central and northern route, retain the distinctive first sounds: South Tarawa, Majuro, Ngerulmud, Palikir.

Watch the name and jurisdiction traps

TemptationHow to reject it
A major town replaces the national capitalLae, Luganville and Neiafu are prominent locally, but the country pairs remain Port Moresby, Port Vila and Nukuʻalofa.
Samoa and American Samoa are treated as one jurisdictionStart with the jurisdiction named in the question. For the sovereign state of Samoa, keep Samoa–Apia as the national pair. Do not merge two similarly named jurisdictions, treat their cities as co-capitals, or let a city associated with the other jurisdiction replace Apia. First underline whether the prompt asks about a sovereign state or a territory; then use only the matching category of capital. Similar regional names do not erase a political boundary, so classify the place before recalling its city.
A country or atoll name is used as the city labelTuvalu pairs with Funafuti. Kiribati pairs with the full English capital name South Tarawa rather than the broader atoll name Tarawa.
A former capital remains familiarPalau now uses Ngerulmud rather than Koror, and the Federated States of Micronesia uses Palikir rather than nearby Kolonia.
Small island countries are swappedKeep the central route fixed: Kiribati–South Tarawa, Marshall Islands–Majuro, Palau–Ngerulmud and Federated States of Micronesia–Palikir.
